Kandy is the last royal capital of Sri Lanka. The one thing that Kandy is Famous for is the temple of tooth which has the tooth of Lord Buddha. Every year the temple hosts a procession called Kandy Perahera in the month of July or August. During this festival the golden casket is paraded by a huge crowd which consists of about 50 elephants, numerous dancers and drummers. This is one of the most important cultural festivals of Sri Lanka. It is a spectacular festival which the tourist should not miss. For all these cultural activities Kandy is also called the cultural capital of Sri Lanka.

The Sinhalese kings ruled this place for a long time. Later they lost it to the British in 1815. The word Kandy is derived from the Sinhala word Kanda which means a hill. Before that it was originally known as Senkadagala pura, named after a hermit Senkada, who used to live here. Today it is bustling city and Kandy tourism provides tourist with a lot of opportunity to have a good time.

Kandy tours offer various attractions for the tourists. Some of the major attractions of the city are – the temple of tooth, which houses the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha and holds a grand annual procession; the Hindu shrines which is visited by both hindus and Buddhist, signalling their co-existence for a long time; the Old royal palace compound which lets you witness the grand heritage of the rulers of Sri Lanka; the Royal Botanical Garden, which is spread across 147 acres and houses a lot of flora and fauna, a lake, garden houses and numerous spice plants; the tea museum which was once a tea factory; Gadaladeniya Temple, an ancient temple built in 1344 and dedicated to lord Vishnu; the Pinnewela Elephant orphanage, built in 1975 to protect and preserve the deceasing number of elephants. Thus there are a wide range of things to keep the tourist occupied while holidaying in Kandy.

Kandy is also an important centre of arts and crafts. It is a place where the elites patronised their crafts in the colonial era. You can shop for exquisite handicrafts and other artefacts out here. Reaching here is not a problem as it is well connected to other Sri Lankan Cities. You can take a bus to Kandy from all parts of Sri Lanka. Bus ride takes about 2.5 hours from Colombo and even trains are available. You can also choose to hire a taxi and drive on your own.

With it cool and pleasant climate it is good to visit Kandy during the summer months, otherwise it can be visited all the year around. A lot of people come here during the early August to participate in the Kandy Perahera, Sri Lanka’s biggest annual festival.
